FREE COMMUNITY MEALS DURING COVID-19 CRISIS

The New York State Stay-at-Home Guidance prompted by COVID-19 has temporarily shuttered many local businesses. As a result, many residents are challenged with getting healthy meals for their families. Gullotta House has partnered with numerous local restaurants and organizations to provide thousands of free meals to Westchester families in need. As of April 27th, over 17,500 meals have been provided.

The Ossining Micro Fund, the Tasty Table,   and the Ossining PTA have each galvanized their supporters for separate events in Ossining. Stone Fire is feeding Mt. Kisco families and First Responders. The Grille Somers Pointe is providing free meals in Somers with support from Stephanie’s Mission and the Somers PTA.  Additional partnering restaurants and organizations are Briarcliff Market & Deli, Hudson Anchor, The Stamford Diner, The Mirage, Sal’s Pizza, Tarry Tavern, Terra Rustica, DeliBagel Cafe, Orfino’s Restaurant, Broad River,  Westchetser Tobacco-Stationary, and the Yonkers, Pleasantville, Bronx and Briarcliff Rotary Clubs.

We are grateful to our donors for making this all possible. Please patronize these restaurants who are stepping up to the plate in this moment of need. Consider donating to individual events or Gullotta House to help underwrite Neighbors helping Neighbors.

Please protect your own health and our meal providers by following social distancing protocols, such as remaining six feet apart from others as you wait for your meal. Wash your hand with warm soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you have one available, wear a face mask or otherwise be conscious of not touching your face.

As of April 27th, Westchester County had 28,700 confirmed cases and 962 deaths from Covid-19. We will get through these difficult times together. Read about the news coverage of our events in the River Journal or watch the video news reports on News 12. Our efforts were recently covered by NBC news and The Somers Record.

Gullotta House is blessed to have many supporters help it achieve its mission of helping Westchester residents in need regardless of past income.  We are also lucky to be in the vibrant Ossining community where we get to interact with other dynamic individuals and other superb organizations.  Recently our founder, Matthew Gullotta, along with the Ossining Micro Fund founder Dana Levenberg were interviewed by Assemblywoman Sandy Galef.  Read more at Sandy Galef’s site.

Gullotta House Competed for Community Thrives Grant

To all of our supporters, volunteers, organizers and leadership – thank you!  In 2019, we’d been around for a scant four years but we were approved to compete for A Community Thrives Grant for $100,000 due to our effectiveness and stewardship in assisting thousands of families at our dozen or so events annually.  We didn’t win, but it was an honor to compete with other reputable charities in operation many years longer than us.  To find out more about our mission, read our About Us page.  Read more about Gullotta House qualifying to compete for this prestigious grant in the River Journal.

Thanks for Helping 2020 Escape from Sing Sing Plunge Beat Last Year’s Fundraising Mark

Each year we’ve conducted the Escape from Sing Sing Plunge, we get more participants who raise more money and attract more coverage from local outlets.  Proceeds from the Plunge help Gullotta House perform its mission of aiding residents of Westchester County who face financial or other hardships.  Food, scholarships, community outings and holiday assistance are among the initiatives undertaken by our charitable organization.  Consider donating to our annual Sing Sing Plunge.  To learn more about the 2020 Plunge, take a read in Newsbreak, listen to the podcast on Westchester Talk Radio or watch the coverage on Westchester News 12.

Gullotta House Raises $14,300 in Response to Landmark Diner Fire

The Landmark Diner had long been a fixture in the Ossining community for decades.  It served as a venue for Sunday brunches, business lunches, and an after-hours hang out for Ossining High School students.  Owner, Aristidis Thanos had been a frequent contributor to our efforts.  When the diner burned to the ground with a sudden fire in August 2019, not only was this vibrant restaurant wrested from the community, but also a dozen employees were suddenly without a job.  Within a week of the tragic fire, Gullotta House organized a fund raiser in Nelson Park gathering some $14,300 that went entirely to the affected workers.  It is the generosity of the community that allow us to respond to inopportune moments of need.  Consider donating to Gullotta House, giving to specific impromptu events, or to the campaigns we repeat annually.  Be sure to keep apprised of possible re-opening of this historic diner here.

Gullotta House and Westchester Knicks

For so many of us, sports, music, movies, books or other cultural events are early memories of time with our parents and other family members. The impetus behind Gullotta House’s partnership with the Westchester Knicks is influenced by that reality. Spending quality time with family and friends at a fun-filled event, especially in our formative years can have a lifetime imprint. Donations to Gullotta House for this event goes towards buying a free ticket for a game which includes an all you can eat buffet for children under 18 years old. In the past three years, we’ve sponsored 1,500+ attendees. Children always go free along with food and drink.

For 2020, the Nonprofit of the Night event will be held Friday, March 13th beginning at 7 p.m. The Westchester Knicks will match up against the Canton Charge. Festivities will include NY Knicks Legend Night with all types of regalia available for fans, including LJ signed Jersey, Bernard King book, Looney Tunes Jerseys, and Black History memorabilia. Adult tickets are priced at $17 and can include free admission for up to 3 kids. VIP Lounge tickets are available at $25 as well.

Affiliated with New York Knicks, the Westchester Knicks are a professional basketball team of the NBA G League. Home games are played at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, NY. The team roster includes two-way contract players Kadeem Allen and Kenny Wooten. Players promoted from the Westchester Knicks to play at Madison Square Garden for the New York Knicks are Langston Galloway (2014), reigning MVP Giannis Antetokkounmpo’s brother Thanais (2015), Jimmer Fredette (2015), and Trey Burke (2017). Two other players, Chasson Randle and Nigel Hayes, received 10-day contracts with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2017 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018, respectively.

Perhaps one of the most exciting promotion (from effectively the NBA’s minor league) was Jeremy Lin’s call up in 2012. Undrafted out of Harvard, Linsanity took over the metropolitan area when this point guard led the Knicks on a 7-game winning streak and became the first player to score at least 20 points and have 7 or more assists in his first five starts.

While thought of as an overnight success, the reality of the matter is Lin had a stellar high school career, was a 3-time All-Ivy player, and worked hard on his game and conditioning, both on and off the court, during the season and the off-season to chase his dreams.  Somewhere, someone, gave him a helping hand and the rest is history.  Here at Gullotta House, we recognize the difference between success and failure could be just that – a helping hand at a pivotal moment.  We help families in need regardless of past income.

We would not be able to have such events without sponsors.  This time around, our sponsors include John D. Crawford Mortuary Services, The Elks Lodge Ossining, The Westchester Bank, REY Insurance, AAA Nola, and Janet Brand of Houlihan Lawrence.

In addition to our Basketball night with the Westchester Knicks, we have four other perennial events – the Escape From Sing Sing Plunge, Liftoween, Turkeys for Thanksgiving and the Duck Race.  We also have spontaneous fundraisers in response to sudden tragedies, such as the fire at the Landmark Diner in 2018 leaving workers suddenly jobless.

We are so grateful to all of our contributors, advisors, volunteers, suppliers and recipients who enable us to be of service to our community and our neighbors.  If you haven’t already or would like to give more, donate or volunteer at any time.
